Most candidates never see this coming. They reread the competency domains, outline the frameworks, work through every practice question they can find, and log 30, 40, sometimes 50 hours. Then they open the first vignette and think:

Two options read as right. The clock keeps moving. You talk yourself out of one answer, then back into it, and now the timer is a second problem on top of the first.

Reading more won't close that gap. The gap was never information. It's how you decide when the clock is running and two answers look equally defensible — and nothing in a study guide trains that.

Why strong coaches lose points they shouldn't

The exam doesn't ask whether you can define a term. It asks what a disciplined, scope-aware coach does next. And it builds the questions to catch the moves that feel helpful in the moment and cost you points:

• The Rescue Reflex — you fix or reassure when the disciplined move is to stay in the question.
• Scope Collapse — you keep coaching past a clinical red flag that calls for a referral.
• Sponsor Bias — you serve the employer who's paying over the client in the room.
• Procedural Drift — you start coaching before the agreement is clear.

None of these are gaps in what you know. They're decisions made wrong under pressure. Reading doesn't train decisions.

I learned this near the end of my own prep

I'm a Harvard-trained psychologist, a Harvard MBA, and an executive coach — and the person who first studied for this exam exactly the wrong way.

Thirty-plus hours of reviewing, organizing, trying to cover everything. Then, a few days out, it landed:

Safety first. Scope second. Contract third. Relationship fourth. Growth last. Drill that order until it answers before you do, and the impulsive errors stop.

What a failed attempt actually costs
