BCC Exam Prep Options Compared: What Each Kind of Resource Does Well

Good BCC exam prep does three things: it shows you accurately what the exam asks, teaches the knowledge behind all six domains, and gives you case-based practice under exam-like time. No single kind of resource does all three well. This comparison takes each category in turn (CCE’s own materials, general coaching books, study guides with practice questions, online courses and timed simulators), says what each is good for and what it lacks, and ends with a feature table and our own approach.

What BCC exam preparation needs to cover

Start from the exam itself. According to CCE’s BCCE Handbook (July 2025), the Board Certified Coach Examination has 12 case studies, each a vignette followed by 10 multiple-choice questions: 120 items, 100 scored and 20 unscored pretest items, with four options each, in three hours. The 2025 content outline sets six domains: Ethical and Professional Standards (20 percent), Agreements and Goal-Setting (10 percent), Coach Presence and Applied Skills (25 percent), Effective Coach-Client Communication and Rapport (15 percent), Facilitating Client Growth and Accountability (15 percent), and Coaching Business Practices and Professional Development (15 percent).

That gives you six questions to ask of any resource. Is it accurate to the current exam? Does it teach all six domains in proportion to their weight? Is its ethics keyed to the BCC Code of Ethics? Does it offer case-based practice with four-option items? Does it explain every option, not just the key? And can you practice under time and see your results by domain?

CCE’s own materials: handbook, content outline and self-assessment

Good for: authority. CCE’s BCCE Handbook governs eligibility, registration, fees, scheduling and retesting, and the content outline defines the domains and their weights. The BCC Code of Ethics, also published by CCE, is the ethics reference the exam applies. CCE also offers a BCCE self-assessment; check CCE’s site for its current format and terms.

What they lack: teaching. The handbook and outline tell you what is tested, not how to reason through it, and a self-assessment, whatever its format, measures where you stand rather than building the knowledge. Read CCE’s materials first and again before you sit, rely on them for every policy question, and use other resources to learn.

General coaching books

Good for: depth. Books on coaching models, motivational interviewing, cognitive-behavioral approaches, positive psychology and professional ethics build the understanding that applied judgment rests on, and many are worth reading for your practice as well as for the exam.

What they lack: fit to this exam. They are not organized around the 2025 content outline or weighted to it, they may teach another body’s ethics code or competency model, and they rarely include exam-style items. You can read widely and still be unready for a ten-question case under time.

Study guides with practice questions

Good for: structure at a modest price. A good guide maps its teaching to the domains, keys its ethics to the BCC Code and includes practice you can work anywhere, without a screen.

What to check: whether the practice is case-based, with a vignette followed by several items as on the exam; whether items have four options and a single best answer; whether every option is explained, including the runner-up; and whether the guide reflects the 2025 content outline.

What they lack: whatever print cannot do. A book cannot time you case by case, hold back feedback until a section ends, or show how your results move over weeks of practice. And a printed practice exam can be sat fresh only once.

Online courses

Good for: teaching in more than one form. Video, audio and structured modules suit people who learn by listening and watching, fit around a working schedule, and can be updated when the exam changes.

What they lack: it varies. Some courses teach well but offer little exam-like practice; others offer quizzes that check recall rather than case-based judgment. Before you enroll, look for timed cases, an explanation for every option and a way to see your results by domain.

Timed simulators

Good for: rehearsal. A simulator can time each case, hold feedback until a section ends, run a full-length sitting in exam mode and track your results across sittings. That is as close as you can come to the exam before you sit it, and it trains pacing, which reading cannot.

What they lack: teaching, when they stand alone. A question bank without instruction lets you drill without learning why you miss. And any simulator is only as good as its items: original cases, plausible distractors and explanations that name the deciding fact.

Our approach: start with the guide, rehearse with the simulator

We built BCC Exam Prep around the gaps in that table. The guide and the course come from the developer of the BCC Exam Prep simulation, a Board Certified Coach and Professional Fellow of the Institute of Coaching, who also founded the Positive Psychology Institute and aced the BCC exam.

The Board Certified Coach Exam Study Guide (about 240 pages, as an 8.5 x 11 paperback and on Kindle) teaches the knowledge. Part I explains the exam and how to read a case. Parts II to VII follow the six domains, and every section ends with an exam-style decision and a second-best test that names the fact that would reverse the answer. Part VIII is a full-length practice exam of 12 new cases and 120 questions in three hours, and Part IX explains every option of every question, with scoring by domain, an error-log method and an exam-day pacing plan. Study plans for 2, 4 and 8 weeks, a BCC Code quick reference and a glossary complete it. It was developed from the BCC Exam Prep course and the Positive Psychology Institute’s Foundations of Coaching curriculum.

The BCC Exam Prep course and simulator adds what print cannot: teaching modules for all six domains, short concept videos, an audio discussion of every module, and timed case simulations that build from short practice runs to a full-length sitting in exam mode, with feedback held until the section ends, as on the real exam. Every option is explained, a readiness report shows where your results are strongest and weakest, and an extended-time practice path serves candidates with CCE-approved accommodations. The guide’s practice cases are new and do not repeat the simulator’s, so each gives you a fresh rehearsal.

Together they are the most complete BCC preparation we know of: CCE’s facts, teaching across every domain, ethics keyed to the BCC Code, case-based practice on paper and on screen, an explanation for every option, timed sittings in exam mode and results by domain.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best BCC exam prep?

The strongest preparation covers everything the exam asks: accurate facts from CCE, teaching across all six domains, ethics keyed to the BCC Code, and case-based practice under time with every option explained. No single category does all of that. Our study guide and course together are the most complete preparation we know of, but read CCE’s own materials whatever else you choose.

Do I need a course, or is a study guide enough?

A good guide can teach the domains and give you one honest full-length rehearsal. It cannot time you case by case, hold back feedback the way the exam does, or show how your results change across sittings. If you have the time, read first and then rehearse under time. The $50 coupon in our guide covers its own price if you continue to the course.

Are CCE’s own materials enough to prepare?

They are essential but not sufficient. CCE’s handbook governs eligibility, fees, scheduling and retesting, and its content outline defines the domains and weights. They describe what is tested rather than teach it, and a self-assessment measures where you stand rather than building knowledge. Use them alongside a resource that teaches the domains and offers case-based practice with explanations.

How much does BCC Exam Prep cost?

The study guide is $49.99 on Amazon, and every copy includes a $50 coupon for the course. Redeem it at bccexamprep.com/book with the passphrase printed in the book. The course and simulator are $297 (an introductory price through December 31, 2026; $397 from January 1), or $247 with the reader code. The free sample costs nothing. Exam fees are set by CCE; see its current handbook.
