To become a Board Certified Coach (BCC), you need a bachelor’s degree, 30 to 120 hours of CCE-approved coach-specific training depending on your background, at least 30 hours of post-degree coaching experience, one professional endorsement and a passing score on the Board Certified Coach Examination (BCCE). You apply through the Center for Credentialing & Education (CCE), pay a $279 application and exam fee ($229 for National Certified Counselors), and keep the credential with a $40 annual maintenance fee and 70 hours of continuing education every five years.

BCC requirements in eight steps
The steps below follow CCE’s BCC Credential Eligibility Policy (last updated July 3, 2025), CCE’s BCCE Handbook (updated July 1, 2025), CCE’s BCC Costs page and CCE’s BCC Credential Maintenance Policy, all checked in October 2026.
- Confirm your degree. CCE requires a bachelor’s or graduate degree in any field, documented with an official transcript.
- Find your training pathway. Your degree, plus any license, national certification or ICF credential, sets whether you need 30, 60 or 120 clock hours of coach-specific training.
- Complete CCE-approved training. Train with a provider on CCE’s approved list and keep the official certificate of completion.
- Log 30 hours of post-degree coaching. A coach, colleague or supervisor must verify the hours on CCE’s Coaching Experience Form.
- Secure one professional endorsement. Ask a colleague, coaching professional or supervisor who is not a relative.
- Apply and pay through CCE. Submit your application in CCE’s Credentialing Gateway with the $279 fee ($229 for NCCs).
- Schedule and pass the BCCE. Sit the exam within 90 days of your Authorization to Test, at a Pearson VUE center or online.
- Maintain and renew. Pay the $40 maintenance fee each year and complete 70 continuing education hours every five years.
Eligibility tiers: how many training hours you need
CCE’s BCC Credential Eligibility Policy sets four training pathways, and every pathway requires a bachelor’s or graduate degree in any field:
- 30 clock hours: a master’s degree in business administration, social sciences or behavioral health, plus an active state license or national certification.
- 60 clock hours: the same master’s degree without a license or certification.
- 60 clock hours: a current International Coaching Federation (ICF) ACC credential or higher, plus a bachelor’s degree in any field.
- 120 clock hours: all other applicants.
CCE considers other related master’s degrees case by case. Training must come from a CCE-approved provider and cover four content areas named in the policy: Ethics and Regulatory Guidelines, Coaching Knowledge and Applications, Assessment, and Practice Management. CCE verifies training with official certificates of completion and may request course syllabi. For degrees earned outside the United States, CCE’s requirements page asks for an evaluation from ECE, IERF or WES.
CCE’s requirements web page groups some categories differently from the July 2025 policy, so confirm your pathway with CCE before you pay for training. If you hold or are weighing an ICF credential, our comparison of Board Certified Coach vs ICF credentials explains how the two fit together.
Coaching experience and endorsement
CCE’s eligibility policy requires at least 30 hours of post-degree coaching services, verified by a professional coach, colleague or supervisor who can personally confirm the work and documented on CCE’s Coaching Experience Form. Because the requirement is post-degree, coaching you did before earning your degree does not count.
You also need one positive endorsement from a professional colleague, coaching professional or employment supervisor that speaks to your professionalism and integrity. The policy bars endorsers related to you by blood, marriage or other family relationship. Your application must also fully disclose any prior legal, criminal or disciplinary matters.
Applying through CCE: fees and timing
You apply online through CCE’s Credentialing Gateway at my.cce-global.org. According to CCE’s BCC Costs page, the application and exam fee is $279, or $229 for National Certified Counselors, and fees are nonrefundable and nontransferable. Optional specialty designations cost $30 each to review.
CCE’s BCCE Handbook adds that fees are forfeited if registration is not completed within one year, so gather your transcript, training certificates, experience form and endorsement before you start the application.
The BCC exam
The BCCE has 12 case studies, each a vignette followed by 10 multiple-choice questions, for 120 items: 100 scored and 20 unscored field-test items, according to CCE’s July 2025 BCCE Handbook. You have three hours, which works out to about 90 seconds per item. You can test at a Pearson VUE center or online through OnVUE from a private location.
After CCE approves your application, Pearson VUE sends an Authorization to Test, and you have 90 days to sit the exam. You receive an unofficial score report showing your score, the cut score and whether you passed. Subject matter experts set the passing score through standard setting, and statistical equating adjusts it across exam forms.
The handbook weights the scored content across six domains:
- Ethical and Professional Standards: 20%
- Agreements and Goal-Setting: 10%
- Coach Presence and Applied Skills: 25%
- Effective Coach-Client Communication and Rapport: 15%
- Facilitating Client Growth and Accountability: 15%
- Coaching Business Practices and Professional Development: 15%

Rescheduling and retakes
According to CCE’s BCCE Handbook, you can reschedule with Pearson VUE up to 24 hours before your appointment. A cancellation within 24 hours requires a $100 reregistration fee unless a waiver is approved, and missing the appointment or arriving more than 15 minutes late forfeits your fees.
If you do not pass, CCE’s eligibility policy lets you retest 90 days later by reregistering, and the handbook sets the reregistration fee at $100. You may take up to two more administrations within two years of your original application date. After three unsuccessful attempts, or once two years have passed, the application closes and you must submit a new one.
Keeping your BCC: maintenance and renewal
The BCC is valid for five years as long as you follow CCE policies, according to CCE’s Maintain Your Credential page. Each year you pay a $40 maintenance fee (a $15 late fee applies after the due date), and paying it affirms that you follow the BCC Code of Ethics.
To recertify, you complete 70 clock hours of continuing education during each five-year cycle, including at least 4 hours in coaching ethics and 10 hours in each optional specialty designation you hold, according to CCE’s BCC continuing education page. In the fifth year you sign an ethics attestation, and CCE randomly audits continuing education records. An inactive or expired credential requires a reinstatement application and a $50 fee.
How to prepare for the BCC exam
CCE built the current BCCE around scenarios that reflect actual coaching practice, according to its announcement of the revised content outline, so preparation should focus on applying judgment rather than memorizing terms. Three habits help most:
- Study by domain. Give the most time to Coach Presence and Applied Skills and to Ethical and Professional Standards, which together make up 45% of scored items.
- Practice full vignettes under time. At about 90 seconds per item, pacing across 12 case studies matters as much as knowledge.
- Know ethics and scope. CCE says its subject matter experts focused on ethical considerations and appropriate scope, including how coaching differs from related fields.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to become a Board Certified Coach?
CCE does not set a fixed timeline. Most of the time goes to finishing 30 to 120 hours of CCE-approved training and logging 30 hours of post-degree coaching. Once approved, you have 90 days from your Authorization to Test to sit the BCCE, and CCE’s policy allows up to three attempts within two years of your application date.
How much does the BCC credential cost?
According to CCE, the application and exam fee is $279, or $229 for National Certified Counselors. Each retest costs $100, and the credential carries a $40 annual maintenance fee. Coach training tuition is paid separately to your training provider.
What happens if I fail the BCC exam?
You can retest after 90 days by reregistering and paying the $100 fee. CCE allows up to three total attempts within two years of your original application date. After that, the application closes and you must submit a new one.
Do I need an ICF credential to become a Board Certified Coach?
No. An ICF credential is not required. However, a current ICF ACC or higher combined with a bachelor’s degree lowers the BCC training requirement to 60 clock hours of CCE-approved training, compared with 120 hours for applicants in CCE’s general pathway.
BCC Exam Prep is independent of the Center for Credentialing & Education (CCE) and is not endorsed by it.
